Overcoming Challenges of Web Personalization

We know that personalizing website experiences for shoppers can be tricky – not only because of the technical work, data, software, and more – but also because of the creative nature of deciding what to even customize!

The value of tailoring digital experiences to individuals is clear: it meaningfully boosts revenue by creating relevance and matching to the customer’s affinities. It also makes it easier for them to discover new products, and stay more engaged with your brand for the long term.

What types of elements on your website can you customize? As much as we’d like to say: everything! … the reality is that there are more strategic and valuable focus areas.

Some customization can make navigation easier, directing the shopper to their ideal product categories quicker. This may be by customizing quick navigation menu links towards the top of your landing pages.

On the other hand, different types of dynamic personalization can happen on individual product pages – delivering the right social proof, promotion, or badge to help educate or nudge a shopper in the right direction about a specific item.

Our new guide discusses the different areas across an eCommerce web store that can be dynamically updated to meet shoppers with individualized experiences. You can read or download the guide here!

One particular item to share right now that I love is the chatbot personalization. Chatbots and “conversational marketing” has taken off in the last 5 years, and is an incredible way to engage shoppers who have questions or need navigational help.

Personalizing these chatbot introduction messages based on the website visitor – even for completely anonymous first time visitors – can be a high-converting update. Imagine greeting someone with a recommendation that’s predicted specifically for them, based on the dozens (or hundreds) of datapoints that float around this user and thousands of other similar users in the past.
